Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia - August 1-10, 2001

This August we returned to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to see our daughter church! This time, I went easy on the camcorder usage (so as not to be a totally obnoxious tourist) and opted for more discreet, inconspicous still photography with my new I/O Magic MagicImage 500. I used the low resolution setting (1024x768, so I could take more photos), but I have resized them to 800x600 so it will be less of a hassle to upload and download them. Using 4MB and 8MB SmartMedia cards, I captured exactly 99 photos; I also have some video from my old 8mm Canon ES170 camcorder, but I won't put those up just yet, not until I have ethernet at Berkeley so I can upload them.

Now about the camera. It isn't exactly the greatest camera out there, but it was cheap and if used correctly, the photographs it takes look very good. However, most people can't use it correctly. Some of the pictures were taken by other people who jiggled the camera as they shot (making the image blurry), or they did not align the image in the box within the viewing window (making the image off-center), etc. So on a couple of photos I have done a little tinkering with Photoshop brighten them or adjust white-balance. Most of them are MY shots, though, and they look fine, although occasionally I did take a sinker or two.

Are you ready to view the album? Then let's go!
